What is the Start-Stop system?

Automatic Start-Stop (also called S&S, Auto Stop or ISG on some brands) is a factory fuel-saving feature. When you roll to a halt in traffic or at a red light and the car is stationary, the ECU shuts the engine off. The moment you lift off the brake or dip the clutch, it fires the engine back up so you can move away.

Carmakers fit it because those few seconds of engine-off at every stop shave a small amount of fuel and CO2 off the official test-cycle figures, which helps them meet emissions targets. To support the frequent restarts, S&S cars use a reinforced starter motor and a heavier-duty battery (often an AGM or EFB unit) with battery-management electronics.

How the disable works in the ECU

Start-Stop Disable is a pure software change. We modify the calibration in your engine ECU so the automatic stop function is switched off permanently — the engine simply stays running whenever you are stationary.

• Default state changed: instead of arming the auto-stop each time you start the car, the ECU leaves it disarmed by default.
• No more button pressing: you no longer need to hit the S&S off switch every trip; the setting stays off across ignition cycles.
• Sensors untouched: the brake, clutch and battery sensors keep working normally — the ECU just no longer acts on them to cut the engine.

Because it only changes a logic flag and its supporting conditions, it does not alter power, fuelling or emissions hardware in any way.

What changes when you drive

The difference is immediate and purely about comfort and smoothness. The engine no longer shudders off and restarts every time you stop, which many drivers find far more pleasant in stop-go traffic.

• Smoother stops: no restart shake when the lights go green, and instant throttle response as you pull away.
• Steady climate control: the A/C compressor keeps turning at a standstill, so cooling does not fade in hot weather and the cabin stays comfortable.
• Fewer restart cycles: the starter and battery are no longer cycled dozens of times per journey, which some owners prefer for long-term peace of mind.

Honest trade-off: with the engine idling at every stop, idle fuel use and idle emissions rise very slightly compared with the engine being off. In heavy city traffic you may notice a tiny increase in consumption — this is the fuel the OEM system was designed to save.

Who it suits

Start-Stop Disable suits any petrol or diesel car fitted with a factory automatic Start-Stop system where the driver simply dislikes the constant engine cut-out. It is one of the most popular comfort tweaks because it changes nothing about how the car performs — it only removes an annoyance.

It is especially popular with drivers in hot climates who rely on strong A/C at a standstill, those who do a lot of stop-start city driving, and anyone who is tired of pressing the off button at the start of every journey. It pairs happily with a Stage 1 remap or can be applied entirely on its own.

Things to consider

Start-Stop Disable does not touch your car's emissions control hardware — the catalytic converter, particulate filter, EGR and any AdBlue system all remain fully active and unchanged. In most regions this makes it a low-sensitivity change compared with emissions deletes, and it does not affect the car's exhaust output beyond the marginal extra idling.

• Battery still matters: S&S cars use a reinforced starter and AGM/EFB battery. Disabling auto-stop does not harm them; if anything it reduces restart cycling.
• Warranty: any ECU change can in principle affect a manufacturer warranty. It is fully reversible to stock for service or resale.
• Emissions honesty: because the engine idles at every stop, real-world idle CO2 and fuel use are marginally higher than with the system active — a small comfort-versus-economy trade.
