OBD Readiness Calibration — Pass the Scan After Service

What OBD readiness monitors are
Every car built to the OBD-II / EOBD standard runs a set of built-in self-tests called readiness monitors (sometimes "I/M readiness" or "emission monitors"). Each monitor checks that one emissions-related system is working: the catalytic converter, the oxygen (lambda) sensors and their heaters, the EVAP fuel-vapour system, the EGR valve, the secondary air system, and on diesels the SCR/AdBlue aftertreatment, the particulate filter and the exhaust-gas sensors.
As the car drives, the ECU quietly runs each test. When a test has completed at least once, that monitor is flagged Ready (complete). Until then it stays Not Ready (incomplete). A modern OBD or periodic emissions inspection reads these flags through the diagnostic port and expects nearly all of them to say Ready before it will even accept the test.
Why they read "not ready" after service or tuning
The readiness flags are wiped back to Not Ready whenever the ECU loses its stored self-test history. That happens after completely normal workshop events:
- Clearing fault codes with a diagnostic tool — erasing DTCs also resets the monitors.
- Disconnecting the battery or a flat battery, which drops power to the ECU's memory.
- An ECU reflash or software update, including emissions-related recalibration and tuning work.
- Certain repairs to sensors, the exhaust or the aftertreatment system.
The engine is fine and no warning light is on, but the self-tests simply haven't been re-run yet. Take the car straight to an inspection in that state and it fails — not for a fault, but because too many monitors still say Not Ready. Most OBD inspections allow only one incomplete monitor (older vehicles sometimes two); beyond that the test is rejected outright.
Setting them the normal way — the OBD drive cycle
The standard, no-tools way to set the monitors is to complete a drive cycle: a specific sequence of cold start, idle, steady cruise, gentle acceleration and deceleration that gives the ECU the exact conditions each self-test needs. Do it correctly and the monitors turn Ready on their own.
The catch is that the drive cycle can be fussy. Some monitors — the EVAP and catalyst tests especially — only run in a narrow window of coolant temperature, fuel level, ambient conditions and steady speed. It can take several careful trips over a day or two, and a single interruption can force you to start again. That is why, after service or tuning, a correct readiness calibration is often the faster, more reliable route to a pass.
How readiness calibration works inside the ECU
Readiness calibration works with the same self-test status data the ECU already keeps. Instead of waiting for every drive-cycle window to line up by chance, the calibration sets the monitor completion flags to Ready / complete so the diagnostic port reports the car as tested and finished.
Importantly, this is about the status flags, not the emissions hardware. The catalytic converter, lambda sensors, EGR, EVAP and diesel aftertreatment all stay physically in place and keep doing their job — the calibration does not remove or disable anything. It is intended for a healthy vehicle that would pass the scan anyway once its monitors finished, letting it pass now rather than after days of drive-cycle attempts.

Readiness calibration suits both petrol and diesel vehicles that have just had a battery change, a diagnostic reset, an ECU reflash or emissions-related service and now need to clear an OBD scan or periodic inspection without waiting out a long drive cycle. Diesels with SCR/AdBlue and a particulate filter have extra aftertreatment monitors that are especially slow to complete naturally, so they benefit most.
Honesty matters here. This solution is meant to reflect a vehicle's true state — a genuinely healthy car passing a scan it would pass anyway. It is not a way to hide a real fault or a failing emissions component: if a system is actually broken, its monitor will still detect the fault and set it again, and masking a genuine emissions failure to pass an inspection may be illegal in your country.
