What is the immobiliser, and what is Immo Off?

The immobiliser is a factory anti-theft system. When you turn the key or press start, the engine ECU exchanges a coded signal with an immobiliser component — a key transponder, a separate immo box, or the instrument cluster — and only allows the engine to start if that handshake matches. It is designed so a stolen car cannot be driven away and a random ECU cannot simply be plugged in and run.

Immo Off (also called immobiliser delete or immo bypass) is a modification of the ECU software so it no longer waits for or checks that immobiliser signal. The engine then starts and runs on the ECU alone. This is a legitimate workshop procedure — but only on a vehicle or engine you own, for repair or conversion. It is not a tool for defeating theft protection on a car that is not yours.

How Immo Off works inside the ECU

Inside the ECU, the immobiliser check is a piece of code and a stored security key that must agree with the transponder or cluster before fuelling and ignition are released. Immo Off edits exactly that logic so the check passes unconditionally or is skipped altogether.

• Handshake bypass: the routine that queries the immo component and waits for a valid answer is neutralised, so the ECU stops requiring it.
• Status forced to "learned": the internal flag that says "a valid key is present" is set permanently, so the engine treats every start as authorised.
• Stored keys untouched elsewhere: only the engine ECU is changed; the rest of the fuelling, boost and emissions calibration stays exactly as it was.

The result is an ECU that behaves normally in every way except that it no longer depends on the original security network to run — ideal when that network is missing, faulty or from a different vehicle.

When Immo Off is the right fix

The typical, legitimate reasons to delete the immobiliser are practical repair and build situations where the original security link cannot be restored:

• Engine swaps: fitting an engine and its ECU into a different chassis whose keys, cluster and immo box will never match the donor ECU.
• ECU replacement: a dead ECU replaced with a good used unit from another car — the donor ECU is locked to keys you do not have.
• Failed immobiliser or cluster: a faulty immo box, damaged cluster or lost/broken key that locks an otherwise healthy car and cannot be economically recoded.
• Bench and standalone running: running an engine on a test bench, in a boat, generator, kit car or classic conversion with no factory body electronics at all.

In all of these the vehicle simply will not start until the ECU stops demanding a handshake it can never receive. Immo Off restores a working engine without hunting down obsolete keys or coding equipment.

Effect on the vehicle

Immo Off changes nothing about how the engine makes power. It does not add torque, alter boost, touch emissions equipment or affect fuel economy — the running calibration is untouched, so drivability, temperatures and reliability are exactly as before. Petrol and diesel ECUs are both supported.

The one real change is functional: the engine will start and run whenever it has fuel, power and a crank signal, without any key authentication. The car may still crank and start with the original key as normal; it simply no longer refuses to run if the immobiliser network is absent or unhappy. Depending on the platform, a related dashboard immobiliser warning can also be cleared so no fault light remains.

Important considerations — security and legality

Immo Off removes a layer of the car's anti-theft protection, and that has real consequences you should understand before proceeding.

• Ownership only: only ever apply Immo Off to a vehicle or engine you legitimately own, for genuine repair or conversion. It must never be used to start, move or take a vehicle that is not yours — that is theft, and disabling anti-theft to do it is a crime.
• Reduced security: once the immobiliser check is gone, the engine no longer needs the original key to run. Consider an aftermarket immobiliser, tracker or other security if the vehicle stays on the road.
• Insurance and disclosure: disabling a factory anti-theft system can affect insurance cover and roadworthiness in some markets; check local rules and your policy.
• Keep your original: we retain your original file, so the standard immobiliser behaviour can be put back if the correct keys and coding are ever restored.
