What is a hot/cold start fix?
A hot/cold start fix is a targeted recalibration of the start-up strategy inside your engine control unit (ECU). It is not a power map — it addresses the specific moment of starting, when the engine is either heat-soaked after a hot run or cold after standing overnight. Both conditions have their own dedicated tables in the factory software.
On a hot restart the problem is usually fuel: after switch-off the fuel in the rail and injectors expands, gasses off or leaks pressure, so the first crank sees the wrong pressure and a mismatched fuel quantity. On a cold start the problem is ignition of a cold charge — a diesel needs correct glow-plug pre-heat and post-heat plus extra cranking fuel, while a petrol needs a richer mixture and adjusted timing until it lights cleanly. This solution corrects those specific tables.
How the fix works inside the ECU
The calibration works only in the narrow window around engine start, leaving the normal running map untouched. Depending on whether the fault is hot, cold or both, the relevant strategies are corrected:
- Cranking fuel quantity: the amount of fuel injected while the starter is turning is trimmed against coolant and, on diesels, fuel-rail temperature so the first fire is clean rather than flooded or starved.
- Rail pressure & injector correction: the target common-rail pressure during cranking and the per-injector correction are adjusted so a heat-soaked engine still gets a firm, accurate shot of fuel.
- Glow-plug timing (diesel): pre-heat and post-heat durations are re-mapped to temperature so the plugs are actually hot when the engine turns over in the cold.
- Cold idle stabilisation: idle speed, injection timing and, on petrol, spark and enrichment are tuned so the engine holds a steady idle from the first second instead of stumbling or stalling.
Because it only touches the start phase, the fix is low-risk and does not change emissions or power under normal driving.
What you notice on the vehicle
The effect is felt entirely in driveability and reliability rather than on a dyno. A car that needed several seconds of cranking, or two or three attempts on a hot restart, catches almost immediately. A cold engine that stumbled, coughed blue-grey smoke or stalled at first idle settles cleanly.
- Shorter cranking: less time on the starter means less strain on the battery, starter motor and, on diesels, the glow system.
- No hot-soak refusal: the frustrating summer scenario of a warm engine that won't restart after a fuel or shopping stop is resolved.
- Cleaner cold running: steadier cold idle, less smoke and fewer stalls in the first minute.
- Less wear: quick, clean starts reduce fuel wash on the bores and unburnt fuel in the exhaust.
There is no meaningful change to power, torque or economy — that is not what this solution is for.
Who and what it suits
This solution suits any diesel or petrol engine that has developed a genuine start-up calibration weakness, or a vehicle whose factory strategy was always marginal in extreme heat or cold. Common-rail diesels are frequent candidates for hot-start trouble, while older-generation direct-injection and high-mileage engines often benefit on the cold side.
It is aimed at owners chasing reliability and comfort, not performance — daily drivers, work vans, camper conversions and cars used in very hot or very cold climates. It pairs naturally with a healthy fuel system: it optimises the software side of starting, which is often the missing piece once the obvious mechanical checks are clear.
Important considerations
A start calibration corrects software, not hardware. It cannot mask a genuine mechanical fault — leaking injectors, a failing high-pressure pump, worn glow plugs, a tired battery, low compression or a sticking non-return valve must be diagnosed and repaired. Applied to a healthy system with a software weakness, the fix is highly effective; applied over a hardware fault, it only partly hides the symptom.
Because it changes only the start-up window and does not alter emissions equipment or power output, this solution is generally road-legal and warranty-neutral in most regions — unlike emissions deletes such as DPF or EGR removal.
