AGS Removal — Disabling the Active Grille Shutter in the ECU
AGS removal switches off the Active Grille Shutter control inside the ECU, so a failed or faulty air-flap actuator no longer triggers fault codes or a warning light.

What is the Active Grille Shutter (AGS)?
The Active Grille Shutter is a set of motorised air flaps behind the front grille or lower bumper opening. A small electric actuator opens and closes these vanes automatically, and the ECU (or a dedicated air-management module) decides their position from coolant temperature, ambient temperature, road speed and air-conditioning load.
The system exists for three OEM reasons: aerodynamics (closing the shutters at speed reduces drag and shaves a little CO2 and fuel), faster warm-up (keeping them shut when the engine is cold brings it up to temperature quicker and helps the cabin heater), and cooling on demand (opening them when the engine is hot or the A/C is working hard). It is a small efficiency and emissions device — not a power part.
How AGS removal works in the ECU
AGS removal is a pure software change. Nothing is added to the car; the calibration that drives and monitors the shutter is rewritten so the control unit no longer expects a working actuator.
- Actuator control disabled: the ECU stops commanding the flap motor to open and close.
- Monitoring switched off: the plausibility checks — travel time, end-stop position, motor current and feedback signal — are deactivated so a stuck, broken or missing shutter no longer registers as a fault.
- Fault codes cleared: the related DTCs (for example P059F, P056A, P05A0 and manufacturer-specific "grille shutter" codes) stop returning and the warning light goes out.
- Everything else untouched: the radiator fan, thermostat and engine thermal maps keep working exactly as standard — cooling is never left to the shutters alone.
What changes on the car
The headline effect is that the fault is gone: no more AGS error, no warning light, no limp-triggering diagnostics from the shutter subsystem. The engine runs normally without the ECU nagging about a flap it can no longer move.
Because the shutters are usually left (or fixed) in the open position, the practical side effects are tiny: cooling airflow is always available, while the marginal benefits the AGS provided — a fraction less aerodynamic drag at motorway speed and slightly quicker cold-start warm-up — are given up. In everyday driving the difference in fuel economy is negligible. There is no power gain: this is a reliability and fault-clearing solution, not a performance map.
Who needs AGS removal?
This solution suits owners whose AGS has failed or become a nuisance, on petrol and diesel vehicles alike. Typical cases include:
- A seized or broken actuator or stripped shutter gears throwing a persistent fault.
- A position-sensor or wiring fault that keeps lighting the dash even after the part is swapped.
- Shutters that have been removed or damaged after front-end repair, a bumper change or intercooler/cooling upgrade.
- Owners who would rather delete the system than pay for an expensive OEM shutter assembly to fix a purely comfort/efficiency feature.
It applies across common ECU families (Bosch, Continental/Siemens, Delphi, Denso, Magneti Marelli and others) where the shutter is managed in software.
Important considerations
Leave the flaps open. If you or a workshop physically removes or blocks the shutters, make sure they end up in the open position. A shutter jammed shut can restrict radiator airflow and raise coolant temperatures — the safe outcome is always free-flowing air.
Emissions and legality. The AGS is an efficiency/aero aid, not an emissions after-treatment device like a DPF or EGR, so deleting it does not tamper with pollution-control hardware. That said, it is an OEM-fitted CO2-reduction feature: some markets frown on altering type-approved equipment, and in a few regions it may affect an inspection. Removing it is best treated as a repair for a failed system rather than a modification, and you should confirm what is permitted where you drive.
Warranty. Any ECU change can affect the relevant part of a manufacturer warranty. RemapTune keeps your original file, so the software can be returned to stock at any time.
Check AGS removal for your vehicle
AGS behaviour, fault codes and calibration differ from one ECU to the next, so the only reliable way to know whether a clean removal is available for your car is to look at your actual file.
Upload your original ECU read to RemapTune. The system identifies your ECU, confirms compatibility and lists the solutions available for your exact vehicle — AGS removal included — with the expected result before you commit.
