What are overrun burbles and the rev limiter?

When you lift off the accelerator at speed, the engine is still spinning fast but no longer making power — this is called overrun or deceleration. From the factory the ECU responds with deceleration fuel cut-off (DFCO): it stops injecting fuel entirely, because the engine does not need it. This saves fuel, keeps emissions down and keeps everything quiet and clean.

A burble map deliberately changes that behaviour. Instead of cutting fuel cleanly, the ECU keeps injecting a small amount and delays the spark so combustion finishes late — pushing burning and unburnt fuel out into the hot exhaust, where it ignites and produces the pops, crackles and burbles you hear on the overrun.

The rev limiter is the ceiling the ECU enforces at the top of the rev range. This solution lets that limit be adjusted — softened, raised or lowered within safe mechanical bounds — and a softer fuel-cut limiter can add its own crackle as you bounce off it.

How the map works inside the ECU

The whole effect lives in software; no hardware changes. The tuner edits the overrun and limiter tables so the ECU does three things during deceleration:

  • Keeps fuelling: the deceleration fuel cut is disabled or reduced in a chosen rev window, so a metered amount of fuel is still injected while you are off the throttle.
  • Retards ignition: spark timing is pulled back sharply so the mixture burns very late — partly in the exhaust manifold rather than fully in the cylinder.
  • Holds the throttle open slightly: on drive-by-wire engines the throttle can be cracked open a touch to feed a little extra air, sharpening the crackle.

The rev-limit tables are edited separately: the intervention point is moved, and the limiter type (a gentle fuel cut versus an aggressive ignition hard-cut) sets how it sounds. A burble map keeps this all mild — it is the softer, milder cousin of a full pops & bangs or hard-cut map, which pushes far more fuel for loud bangs and the occasional flame.

What it does — and does not do — to the car

Be clear about the trade: this changes how the car sounds and feels, not how fast it is. There is no meaningful power or torque gain — burbles are a character mod, full stop.

  • Sound: pops, crackles and a rortier overrun note when you lift off or shift.
  • Character: a more theatrical, motorsport-flavoured feel on decel and near the limiter.
  • Exhaust temperature: burning fuel in the exhaust raises exhaust gas temperature (EGT) — the single biggest downside.
  • Emissions & noise: both go up. Unburnt and late-burnt fuel means more hydrocarbons and a louder car.

Because the combustion is deliberately dumped downstream, catalytic converters, exhaust valves, turbine housings and manifolds all see more heat and unburnt fuel than the factory intended.

Who it suits

Burble maps are a petrol feature — they work on both turbocharged and naturally aspirated petrol engines. Diesels do not produce the same effect and are not suitable. Popular platforms include hot hatches, sports saloons and coupes where owners want the extra theatre.

It suits drivers chasing sound and personality rather than lap times: track-day cars, show cars, and enthusiasts who love the overrun crackle. It can be combined with a power map, but on its own it adds nothing to performance. If your priority is speed, a Stage 1 map is the right tool; if it is character, this is.

Important considerations — heat, wear and the law

This is a mod with real trade-offs, and we will not sugar-coat them:

  • Higher exhaust temperatures can accelerate wear on catalytic converters, exhaust valves, turbochargers and manifolds — a car driven hard on a heavy burble map works these parts harder than stock.
  • Emissions rise, so the car can fail an emissions or roadworthiness test where combustion cleanliness is checked.
  • Noise regulations: the extra pops and volume can breach static or drive-by noise limits, and anti-tampering rules in many regions.

For these reasons a burble map is generally intended for track, motorsport, closed-course or off-road use, or where it is locally permitted. In many countries it may not be road-legal and could fail noise, emissions or tampering checks. Keeping it mild reduces — but does not remove — the heat and wear penalty. Frequently asked questions

Will a burble map give me more power?
No. Burbles are purely a sound and character change on the overrun and near the rev limiter. If you want more power you need a performance map such as Stage 1; the two can be combined, but the burble part adds nothing to horsepower or torque.
Is a burble map bad for my engine or exhaust?
It raises exhaust gas temperature and pushes unburnt fuel downstream, so cats, exhaust valves, turbos and manifolds run hotter and work harder than stock. A mild map limits this, but there is a real trade-off — it is gentler on hardware than a full pops-and-bangs map, not risk-free.
Is it road-legal?
Often not. The extra noise and emissions can breach noise limits, fail an emissions test and fall foul of anti-tampering rules in many countries. It is generally intended for track, motorsport or off-road use, or where locally permitted — check your local law before using it on the road.
